THE KING’S SCHOOL GOT TALENT:

A night to be remembered…

On the 10th of August 2011 The Kings School Robin Hills produced one of its finest events yet. The official TKS Got Talent hosted a variety of acts ranging from poetry to dance, from vocals to instrumental acts, each one bringing something unique and memorable to the stage. The entire event was part of a fundraiser for the Matric Dance and the crowd really showed their support with cheers louder than the acts themselves. The show was run by a committee of grade 11’s who came together to create the stage, the backdrop, the audio and light display.

The MC’s for the night continued to entertain the audience with jokes and comments that allowed for a smooth transition between acts.  The night was very well attended with additional chairs rushed out to be able to seat the ever increasing crowd. Both acts held their own distinctive performances ranging from familiar hit songs to heart wrenching dances that left everyone roaring with approval after every feat that the entertaining talents had to present. The four judges of the night included Duncan Bower, the director of the 2009 hit musical Godspell; Phil Ngwane, Worship leader at New Creation and professional rockstar; Alex-Ann Keppie, a Kings School graduate and dramatic arts extraordinaire and our Celebrity judge for the night was Erica Elle from 5FM. The nights guest performers included the Prototype prodigy Caleb Kalonji and an amazing dance performance from a talented group from Exploits known only as Beat Belief.

The final judgments truly showed just how tough it had been to find an outstanding winner with the top three results coming mainly from crowd reaction and interaction. At the end of the night when the final votes had been cast Kevin Macfarlane came in third with an amazing display of true talent on his guitar. In second came an act that was as moving as it was unique with Faith Chikonyora and Azel Viljoen performing a simple yet inspiring poem. In first place came the triumphant Dylan Trent whose dancing brought both laughter and amazement from the audience. A special mention goes out to Mark Firman who brought the house down with his incredible drumming talents. Overall the entire crowd left feeling well satisfied and the talent show lived up to its slogan of an event not to be missed.

HOUSE PLAYS:

On 17 March 2010, The King’s School once again held our annual House Plays. Excitement built steadily in anticipation of the event and we were certainly not disappointed.

The plays included Israel’s “The Taming of the Sue”, Judah’s “I was There… Were You?” and Zion’s “Beauty and the Beast”. This year the houses were given a list of items that had to be included as well as one optional item. Each house performed a choral verse, an extract from Shakespeare, a musical item and a dance.

From a soccer match to the final notes of “Beautiful” to spectacular tango dancing, the audience was enthralled the entire evening and the judges were left with the difficult task of choosing 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. A big thank you to the judges, various teachers and many students who helped to make this year’s plays an unforgettable experience!

Best choral verse: Judah
Best Shakespeare: Israel
Best dance: Israel
Best music: Israel
Best set: Zion
Best overall: Israel
